This links to material on the US educational system provided by the Foundations in Area Studies for Translators (FAST) in Finland.
There is no national regulation of tertiary institutions in the USA. Program accreditation is also foreign to most Americans. Some semblance of quality control is provided by the uniquely US tradition of educational institution accreditation. This is the potted version from an American perspective. The system is rather more complex and imperfect than this article admits. It is also necessary to ask who accredits the accreditors.
